How a tdata or session account handover should go

A tdata folder and a .session file are two forms of the same thing: a copy of a Telegram login. Neither is the account itself. The phone number, the 2-step verification password and the other active sessions decide who really controls it.

What tdata is

Telegram Desktop keeps its login in a folder called tdata, which on Windows sits under %APPDATA%\Telegram Desktop. Copying that folder to another computer opens the same account, unless the seller set a local passcode, in which case you need the passcode as well.

What a session file is

A .session file holds the same kind of login key for automation libraries such as Telethon and Pyrogram. Tools can convert a session file into tdata and back, so the format matters less than what comes with it: the phone number, the 2-step password and the other active sessions.

The 24-hour session rule

Telegram does not let a device that has just logged in end the account's other sessions for up to 24 hours. For the first day, the seller's older login can sign you out, but you cannot sign them out. Log in on your own device, wait out the 24 hours, then end every session you don't recognise under Settings > Devices, set your own 2-step verification password and change the number if you can. Don't confirm receipt before then.

What to agree before paying

Write down the format, whether the phone number is included or can be moved to yours, whether a 2-step password is set and will be handed over or removed, and how many other sessions are active. Then test the login on your own device while the deal is still open.

Confirm the seller's authority

Session data can belong to someone else. Ask for evidence that the seller owns or is authorized to transfer the account, and do not accept access to an unrelated person's session.

Local passcode or 2-step password

Sellers mix these up, and buyers pay for it. The local passcode is set inside Telegram Desktop and only locks that copy of the app: without it, the tdata folder you received won't open. The 2-step verification password is a cloud password tied to the account itself, and Telegram asks for it when the account signs in on a new device. A listing should say which of the two exists and how each will reach you. Ask for the passcode with the folder, and agree whether the seller will hand over the 2-step password or remove it. Once the 24-hour wait is over, set a fresh 2-step password that only you know.

When the phone number stays with the seller

Plenty of tdata and session listings come without the number. That can be fine for a short-term use, but price it as what it is: access through someone else's login. Telegram treats the phone number as the account, and it says continued access to that number matters. A session can also end, and if it does, signing back in usually means a code sent to a SIM you don't hold. Ask the seller three things in the deal chat: whether the number can be moved with Change Number in Settings, who holds the SIM today, and what they will do if the session drops during the review period. Their answers belong in the deal record.

Testing the folder while the deal is open

Copy the folder to your own computer before anything else and open it with Telegram Desktop. Check the name, @username and phone number shown in Settings against the listing, then look at Settings > Devices and count the other sessions. The seller should have told you that number in advance. Leave automation tools alone for the first day; a stable login is what you're testing. If the account signs you out inside that window, write down the time and tell the seller in the deal chat. The escrow pays out when you confirm receipt or 30 days after delivery starts, whichever comes first, unless you open a dispute, so raise problems early.

What to check before confirming receipt

  • The tdata folder opens on your own computer, and any local passcode it needed was sent to you with the files.
  • Settings > Devices shows no session apart from yours once the 24-hour wait has passed and you've ended the others.
  • You've replaced the 2-step verification password with your own, so the one the seller knew is no longer valid.
  • The phone number is either now yours through Change Number, or the deal chat states plainly that it stays with the seller.
  • The name, @username and number in Settings match the account described in the listing, and not a similar one.

Common questions

An account delivered as a copy of Telegram Desktop's tdata folder. It opens the login on another computer, but it is a copy: whoever made it may still have the same access.
tdata is Telegram Desktop's own folder; a .session file is the format Telethon and Pyrogram use. Both hold a login key, and tools convert one into the other.
Telegram stops a device that has just logged in from ending other sessions for up to 24 hours. Wait it out, then end the sessions you don't recognise in Settings > Devices.
Check the agreed deliverables before confirming receipt. If they are missing or fail during review, document the issue in the deal and open a dispute within the review window.
Not to open it. The folder logs you in without a code. For lasting control you do, because Telegram treats the number as the account, and a session that ends usually means signing in again with a code sent to that number.
It is a lock set in Telegram Desktop on the seller's computer. A copied folder with a passcode won't open without it. It is separate from the 2-step verification password, which protects the account itself.
At least the 24 hours Telegram needs before a new device can end other sessions, plus the time to end them, set your own 2-step password and move the number if that was agreed. Payment releases automatically 30 days after delivery starts if you neither confirm nor dispute.
Escrozon holds payment during delivery and inspection. Review the listing and check what you receive before confirming. If there is a problem, open a dispute within the deal; if you neither confirm nor dispute, payment may be released to the seller 30 days after delivery starts.
Document the difference in the deal and open a dispute before confirming receipt. A moderator reviews the listing, chat and evidence from both sides. The outcome depends on that review; a refund is not automatic.
